Azerbaijan received the flag of the International Chemistry Olympiad

On July 20-29, the 46th International Olympiad among high school students was held in Hanoi, the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, bringing together 291 schoolchildren from 77 countries. Azerbaijan was represented by four students: Murad Rahimov (Ganja), Javid Ahmadov (Aghdash), Kerim Kerimli (Ganja) and Dilgam Ahmadli (Shirvan).

Our participants were trained for the Olympiad at the Baku branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University under the guidance of lecturers from the Moscow State University Department of Chemistry of Igor Trushkov (organic chemistry - theory), Aleksey Chagarovsky (organic chemistry- practice) Sergey Kargov (physical chemistry - theory and practice). They were invited by the rector of the Baku branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Professor Nargiz Pashayeva. Two participants of the Olympiad from Azerbaijan received special awards with the following results:

Murad Rahimov (Ganja Private Turkish Lyceum) - bronze medal.

Javid Ahmadov - honorable mention.

The closing ceremony of the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad was held on July 28. According to tradition, during the ceremony, the organizers of the Olympiad in Hanoi handed over the Olympic flag to the representative of Azerbaijan - Vice-Rector for International Relations of the Baku branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Oqtay Tagiyev.

The main objective of the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad, to be held in 2015 at the Baku branch of Moscow State University, is to spark the interest of the youth, particularly the students from all over the world, in the chemical sciences. National student teams from 80 countries are expected to participate in the event.

Azerbaijan is the second CIS country after Russia to receive the right to hold the International Chemistry Olympiad among high school students.

The decision to hold the Olympiad at the Baku branch of the Moscow State University was adopted by the Steering Committee of the International Chemistry Olympiad in Washington in July 3, 2012. This decision attests to the prestige and the international recognition of the results achieved by the Baku branch of Moscow State University since its establishment in 2008.

The Faculty of Chemistry of the university has all the required facilities, i.e., various laboratories with advanced equipment. Azerbaijan has always been famous for the high level of its chemical science, especially petro chemistry which plays an important role in the modern economy. Nowadays, the Baku branch of Moscow State University trains specialists for various fields of the chemical science and production.

Under the established rules, the Organizing Committee of the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad was set up in Azerbaijan, presided over by the rector of the Baku branch of Moscow State University, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences, Professor Nargiz Pashayeva.

To date, the Organizing Committee of the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad has achieved significant results: it has prepared a website for the Olympiad, a program for all participants, as well as the rooms and laboratories needed to hold the theoretical and experimental parts of the Olympiad.

All the participants are preparing for and looking forward to the 47th International Chemical Olympiad to be held at the Baku branch of Moscow State University in 2015.
